It’s time to heed the call of the disco ball Adelaide! Off the back of last year’s event with Dimitri from Paris, we’re coming back bigger and better bringing you another installment of DISCOBALL with special guest DJ and Producer Dave Lee JN (Formerly known as Joey Negro).
Hailing from the UK, Dave is a prolific remixer, producer and artist, and champion of the garage/disco revival, Lee is often labeled by the UK media as England’s answer to Masters At Work. Dave can trace his heritage back to M-D-Emm in the late 80s. He is a fanatical record collector who, during the 90s, worked extensively with DJ Andrew ‘Doc’ Livingstone, latterly as the Hedboys. Together with Mark Ryder, he produced several cuts for the same label, using production team names ranging from Quest For Excellence to Masters Of The Universe. However, he ran into trouble when he created the persona Kid Valdez of Mystique. Under that name they mixed the club hit ‘Forever Together’ as Raven Maize. In the early 90’s Dave picked up the Joey Negro moniker, his most well-known and successful, and began to establish an identity as a talented disco remixer. His own material reflects the tastes of his record collection: a penchant for US labels like Prelude and West End, 70s funk, jazz fusion and disco. Joey Negro’s 1993 own name debut included a version of the Gibson Brothers’ ‘Oooh What A Life’, featuring Gwen Guthrie. Dave has subsequently issued material on his own Z Records imprint, with club hits such as ‘Can’t Get High Without You’ (featuring Taka Boom on vocals) and ‘Universe Of Love’ helped spearhead the disco/house revival, alongside a plethora of material under aliases such as Doug Willis, Z-Factor, Foreal People, Sunburst Band, Mistura, Agora, the Hedboys, Raw Essence, Swingtime Dee, and Jakatta. As well as enjoying commercial success with some of these incarnations, most notably Jakatta’s ‘American Dream’, Dave is also an in-demand remixer. He has worked with artists such as Take That (‘Relight My Fire’), M People, the Pet Shop Boys, Lisa Stansfield, the Brand New Heavies, the Blaze and Crystal Waters among others. He enjoyed a notable club hit under his own name at the start of 2006 with ‘Make A Move On Me’. His Defected House Masters compilation is iconic, and his sets at Glitterbox are the things dreams are made of. Who better than to entertain us this Boxing Day then the Don of Disco himself!
