David Bicknell Chief Winemaker - Oakridge Winery As the son of a Scottish sea captain, David was well traveled by the time he arrived in Australia in 1974. Destined for a life in engineering, things u-turned, when at a whim David decided to study nursing at Prince Henry’s Hospital in Melbourne. After an extended trip to Europe in 1990, taking in the major wine regions and a football world cup, the planned Paramedical studies turned to Oenology studies. During his Roseworthy college years, David pruned vines, assisted in additional laboratory work for the faculty, worked in cellar door operations in the Barossa but mostly seemed to wash dishes to get through university. A student vintage for de Bortoli Wines in the Yarra Valley in 1992 changed everything. On graduation, where David was also rewarded with the coveted prize for sensory evaluation, he immediately returned to de Bortoli in a fulltime winemaking position. Fast-tracked in fast moving operation during his nine-year stewardship at de Bortoli, David was fortunate enough to take on additional vintage work at Domaine Louis Latour (Burgundy, 1994), Domaine Paul Blanck (Alsace, 1994) and Chateau du Bluizard (Beaujolais, 1995). It was also during this period that he got his first real taste of wine show judging, at Melbourne, as an associate judge from 1998-2001. Since graduating from Roseworthy College, David has become a veteran of 24 Yarra Valley, three French and two other Australian vintages. His intuitive approach to winemaking incorporates everything from the soil type from which the vines grow to the type of music that is played during vinification. Career highlights include a finalist in the 2008 Gourmet Traveller Wine Winemaker of the Year Competition, Dux of the 2005 Len Evans tutorial and a Co-founder of the Victorian Pinot Noir Workshop. He is a respected senior wine show judge, which has included tenures at the National (Canberra) and Adelaide wine shows, being the a past Chairman at the Melbourne Wine Awards and the current chairman of judges at the Royal Queensland Wine Show. He has been the winemaker at Oakridge Wines since 2002. |
